About the Artist

Maryam is an Iranian-Canadian emerging multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. Her self-taught practice has evolved from realistic oil and digital paintings to an exploration of the subconscious through magical realism using various media. Marked by rich symbolism and a vibrant color palette, her work is heavily inspired by her Persian culture, art,  and literature.

Rooted in her Iranian-Kurdish heritage and immigrant experience, her work explores universal themes of love, loss, identity, aging, fertility, and more. Maryam’s storytelling invites introspection and connection.

Her creative process begins with a vague idea, image or colour story, without the constraints of detailed planning. This organic approach allows for a dynamic and evolving process, where each piece guides its own development through a continuously shifting narrative. Every brush stroke reveals a new shape, and each layer dictates the next. She refines the piece until it feels complete, and she can see the story behind the image.

Her intuitive creative process embraces fluidity and unpredictability, revealing hidden messages from the subconscious. Each piece evolves organically, guided by a balance of imagination and emotion, creating works that resonate with personal and universal experiences
